A workshop on “Emerging Application Areas of Image Processing” was conducted at M.V.S.R Engineering College on 17th and 18th of December 2012. The workshop was organized by Computer Science and Engineering Department, MVSR.  The coordinators for the said workshop were Dr.B.Sandhya, Asoc.Prof, CSED and Ms.D.Sirisha, Asst Prof, CSED. The aim of the workshop was to identify new areas of research in which image processing can have a significant impact.  As Image Processing is an active area of research in diverse fields which are multidisciplinary it is critical to broaden our perspective. The objective was to encourage participants to look towards Image Processing as an active area of research. The workshop was targeted at all the faculty/research professionals working in the area of Image processing and students of engineering colleges. The workshop was conducted in four sessions.

The workshop started with a key note address by Dr. Kumar Eswaran on “Machine Learning for Image classification”. Dr.Kumar Eswaran, Chairman and Managing Director of Altech Imaging and Computing, specialized in AI, Pattern Recognition and Image Processing. His address threw light on the issues of Image classification and how AI can be used to address some of them. The first session concluded with a talk from Mr.J.V.R.Sagar, who is a Senior Scientist in Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO). He discussed on “Robust Techniques in Image Processing”.  His talk helped to understand the need for robust techniques and the various ways of developing such techniques for some typical IP operations like Segmentation.

On the afternoon of 17th, for the second session, a talk by Dr.B.Sandhya on “Topomap Processing” was held. Her talk helped to understand why and how topomaps have to be processed differently using techniques of image processing.

On the second day of the workshop, in the morning session two guest speakers were invited. The first talk was on “Radar Imaging” by Mr.B.S.V.Prasad, who is a Senior Scientist, Research Centre Imarat (RCI), DRDO. Acquisition of Radar images along with their applications was clearly explained. The second talk in the third session was by Dr.G.Anuradha, who is currently working as the Principal of Pragna Bharati Institute of Technology. The lecture covered aspects of Document Image Processing and provided participants directions to work in that area.

The closing keynote speaker for the workshop was Dr. C. Raghavendra Rao, who is currently working as a Professor, Department of Computer and Information Sciences, University of Hyderabad. The talk was on “Statistical Methods for Image Processing”, which provided valuable insights as how certain standard techniques of statistics can be used for Image enhancement, Edge detection, Recognition etc. This lecture was a perfect way to conclude the technical sessions of the workshop as it covered a wide spectrum of Image Processing applications and made participants to ponder about solving problems in IP from varied angles.

The valedictory function was held, on the evening of 18th which was attended by our Principal Dr.S.Uday Kumar, Vice Principal Dr.S.G.S.Murthy. Sri.M.B.S.Purushottam, Chairman, Matrusri Educational Society was the chief guest. Prof.J.Prasanna Kumar, Head, CSED, gave the welcome address and the chief guest distributed the participatory certificates to all the participants. The vote of thanks was proposed by Dr.B.Sandhya, the coordinator for the workshop.
