Madasu Hanmandlu received his B.E. degree in electrical engineering from Osmania Univer sity, Hyderabad, India, in 1973; M.Tech. degree in Power systems from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad, India, in 1976; and Ph.D. degree in control systems from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, New Delhi, India,  in 1981. From 1980 to 1982, he was a Senior Scientific Officer with the Applied Systems Research Program, Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Delhi. In 1982, he joined the Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Delhi, as a Lecturer and became an Assistant Professor in 1990,  an Associate Professor in 1995 and Professor in 1997. He has been an Emeritus Professor with the Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Delhi since August 2014.

From April to November 1988, he was with the Machine Vision Group, City University London, London, U.K., and from March to June 1993, he was with the Robotics Research Group, Oxford University, Oxford, U.K., as part of the Indo–U.K. research collaboration. From March 2001 to March 2003, he was a Visiting Professor with the Faculty of 694 Engineering, Multimedia University, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.


His current research interests include fuzzy modeling for dynamic systems and applications of fuzzy logic to image processing, medical imaging, multimodal biometrics and Surveillance.  He has authored a book on Computer Graphics in 2005 under PBP Publications and also has well over 322 publications in both conferences and journals to his credit. He has guided 30 Ph.Ds and 160 M.Tech students.  He has handled several sponsored projects.  He was an Associate Editor of both Pattern Recognition Journal (January 2005 – March 2011) and of IEEE Transaction Fuzzy Systems and a viewer to other journals such as Pattern Recognition Letters, IEEE Transactions on Image Processing and Systems, Manand Cybernetics (January 2007-2010). He is Senior member of IEEE and is listed in Reference Asia; Asia’s Who’s who of Men and Women of achievement; 5000 Personalities of World(1998), Americal Biographical Institute.


He was a Guest Editor of Defense Science Journal for the special issue  on “Information sets and Information Processing” September, 2011.
